Prof. Dr. Turan Öztürk has won the 2023 İTÜ Science Award (Basic Sciences field)

Prof. Turan Öztürk received his PhD degree from the University of East Anglia, UK, and then moved to the University of Kent at Canterbury, UK, as a postdoctoral fellow, where he developed a new method for the synthesis of fused 1,4-dithiin and thiophene rings from 1,8-diketones using Lawesson's reagent and P4S10.

Exploring the Influence of Dimensionality Reduction on Anomaly Detection Performance in Multivariate Time Series (Prof. Dr. Altan Çakır)

This paper presents an empirical study on integrating dimensionality reduction techniques with advanced unsupervised time series anomaly detection models, focusing on MUTANT and Anomaly-Transformer. Evaluated across MSL, SMAP, and SWaT datasets, the study examines PCA, UMAP, Random Projection, and t-SNE techniques. Findings show dimensionality reduction enhances anomaly detection performance and significantly reduces training times, particularly with UMAP for the MUTANT model. The study highlights the importance of selecting appropriate dimensionality reduction strategies for improved efficiency and accuracy in anomaly detection.

Dr. Mustafa INCE’s new article titled “Practical Lessons and Application Areas at the Engineering School (1795-1909)” (Mühendishane ve Hendese Mektebindeki Pratik (Ameli) Dersler ve Uygulama Mekanları “1795-1909”) was published within the scope of 250th anniversary events of İTÜ

Interdisciplinary Perspectives: 2nd Annual “Social Sciences and Humanities Colloquium Series” was organized.

In the seminar series titled as “2nd Annual Social Sciences and Humanities Colloquium” had organized for the second time this year, speakers from different research fields addressed important topics. Filled with inspiring talks and interdisciplinary perspectives, this event offered participants an in-depth understanding of the social sciences and humanities.

A new article was published by Prof. Tuncay ZORLU and Prof. Aytekin ÇÖKELEZ.

As part of the 250th anniversary events of Istanbul Technical University, the article by Prof. Tuncay ZORLU and Prof. Aytekin ÇÖKELEZ titled “Bilim ve Teknoloji Tarihi Çalışmalarının İTÜ’deki Serencamı: Kişiler, Kurumlar, Programlar, Etkinlikler ve Yayınlar” (The Journey of History of Science and Technology Studies at ITU: People, Institutions, Programs, Events, and Publications) was published in the book "From the Ottoman Empire to the Republic: Politics, Society, and ITU".

A Cooperation Between TDTU and ITU was Established

Within the scope of the cooperation protocol signed between Tashkent State Technical University (TSTU) and Istanbul Technical University (ITU), the exchange of students and academic staff is expected to start soon. This cooperation aims to strengthen academic and cultural ties.

The École des Ponts Paris Tech (ENPC) and ITU will cooperate in the field of European Engineering.

École des Ponts ParisTech (ENPC) in Paris and EELISA have formalized a partnership to advance the study of European Engineering. This collaboration, in conjunction with ITU, to investigate the contributions of French engineers to Ottoman railways. This initiative highlights the interdisciplinary connections between engineering, history, and geopolitics, reinforcing EELISA's dedication to reveal "European Engineering".

Our faculty member Dr. Saltuk Duran from the Sociology Department gave a speech at the French Palace in Istanbul on June 12, 2024.

In this valuable event organized by IFEA and French Consulate Dr. Duran gave a speech titled as "La vie intellectuelle au palais de France à l'époque de l'ambassade de Marie-Gabriel de Choiseul-Gouffier (1784-1792)" at the French Palace in Istanbul. The panel discussions were moderated by French Consul Olivier Gauvin.

The Library of the Higher School of Engineering in the Late Ottoman Empire and early Turkish Republic (1909-1944). Dr. Duygu Aysal CIN’s Online presentation at the 45th MELCOM (Middle East Librarians Commitee) Annual Conference (15 May 2024).

This paper deals with the library of the School of Engineering (Mühendis Mekteb-i Âlîsi) in the early 20th century with a special focus on the various aspects of library practices ranging from the daily activities of borrowing and returning books to the policies employed for the acquisition of library materials. While dealing with the library practices, the paper will also cover the development of the librarianship as a profession and hiring policies of the librarians.

A Book: Burhaneddin Sezerar, the pioneer of electrification works, biographical research was published by our faculty members Res. Asisst. Hande Vural Çelik and Assoc. Prof. Burak Barutçu

Burhaneddin Sezerar dedicated 40 years to Istanbul Technical University’s 250-year history, and during the first century of the Republic of Turkey, he played a pivotal role in electrifying cities, factories, and various facilities.
