The Turkish translation of one of our faculty members, Ebubekir Ceylan's book, The Ottoman Origins of Modern Iraq has been translated by Kenan Kocak and has been published by Vakıfbank Publications. ​

Dr. Ebubekir Ceylan in his book examines the centralizing and modernizing reforms in Baghdad and sheds light on the extent to which Baghdad, and Iraq rely on the Ottoman Empire. Ceylan’s book which is an extension of his Ph.D. dissertation uses new materials from the Ottoman and British archives as well as Arabic and English periodicals. The book explores provincial capitals and the following key points; Tanzimat reforms, modernization, centralization, and Ottomanism. First published in English in 2011, the book is internationally recognized for its skillful presentation of the political and social modernization of late Ottoman Iraq and Baghdad.
