"Water in Istanbul and Beyond: Past, Present, and Future" international symposium that we organized was on March 14, 2023. Dr. Çiğdem Özkan Aygün was a co-applicant on the international project on behalf of ITU and she managed the interdisciplinary research project titled “Water in Istanbul: Rising to the Challenge?”, which began in 2021. The main supporters for this research are the British Academy- Knowledge Frontiers International Interdisciplinary Research Scheme and the research brings together archaeologists, engineers and historians from the University of Edinburg, Northumbria University and Istanbul Technical University. The aim of the project is to investigate water management infrastructure in Istanbul and to see how past practices can provide solutions to current problems.

The international and multidisciplinary research project titled "Water in Istanbul: Rising to the Challenge?", for which Dr. Çiğdem Özkan Aygün is a co-applicant on behalf of ITU and manages the fieldwork, started in 2021. The main sponsor of the research is the British Academy- Knowledge Frontiers International Interdisciplinary Research Scheme. This project brings together archaeologists, engineers and historians from the University of Edinburgh, Northumbria University and Istanbul Technical University to investigate the water management infrastructure in Istanbul (https://biaa.ac.uk/research/water-istanbul/). Another goal of this project is to see how past practices can offer solutions to current problems.

A GIS (Geographical Information System) infrastructure was created for this research with a protocol between ITU and ISKI and with the maps provided by IBB, and many data such as the data obtained from the surveys previously conducted by Dr. Aygün, the works of Hülya Tezcan and Kazım Çeçen, Ottoman Maps, archive scans made by Dr. Aygün were processed on the GIS. The missing information was provided by our university faculty members Dr. Caner İmren and Research Assist. Beril Karadölle, integrated with the data of GPR scans carried out in Sultanahmet. Four workshops were organized with the participation of relevant institutions such as IBB, district municipalities, ISKI, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry to discuss the current water problem and to propose solutions.
