In the article published by Prof. Dr. Ismail Yilmaz and his research group in Spectrochimica Acta Part A: Molecular and Biomolecular Spectroscopy in 2023, a new Fe3+-selective, sensitive, and dual-channel “turn-on” probe based on rhodamine platform carrying thiophenecarboxaldehyde has been developed. The probe (MSB) offers several advantages over existing Fe3+ detection methods, including dual-channel and turn-on fluorescence, fast response time, high sensitivity, and selectivity for Fe3+ ions. Fe3+ imaging was performed in living cells using the probe, and the detection capability of the probe was successfully applied to paper strips and real samples such as drinking water and iron supplement tablets with high recovery rates. Furthermore, the detection of Fe3+ concentration in solutions was successfully carried out using a smartphone application. This study provides a promising approach for the development of new, effective Fe3+ sensing tools for biological and environmental applications.
