Within the scope of EELISA, an emergency workshop titled "Social Science Garage: Emergency Workshop for Engineers" was organized at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) in Madrid on March 30-31, 2023. EELISA facilitated the mobility and participation of 10 students from Istanbul Technical University (ITU) in the workshop. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aslı Çalkıvik from the Department of Sociology has been working as a consultant for the activities of the EELISA-ITU Student Club.

The Social Science Garage Emergency Workshop for Engineers aimed to provide participants with a solid understanding of essential concepts and frameworks in the field of Social Sciences. This knowledge is crucial for enhancing the impact and effectiveness of engineering projects with a social objective. The workshop also emphasized the importance of holistic thinking in addressing the challenges faced by engineers, promoting awareness of the diverse roles that different engineering disciplines play in finding solutions to social problems outlined in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Ultimately, the workshop aimed to nurture creative, innovative, and critical thinking skills that enhance students' awareness of societal issues.

The workshop spanned for two days, taking place on March 30-31, 2023. Participants were introduced to key concepts in the Social Sciences that intersect with engineering, such as solutionism, design, inequality, and social structures. They also had the opportunity to reflect on these concepts and explore how they influence their research, dissertation projects, and other works.

By developing their abilities to think with a social dimension, engineering participants were taught to be better equipped to integrate social considerations into their projects and works, with a particular focus on the SDGs and contemplating the transformative potential of engineering.

Among the international researchers who delivered keynote speeches was Assoc. Dr. Aslı Çalkıvik.
